Lets see how long they will stay away. There are buckets of DOLLARS waiting to be made in the App Store.

It looks descriptive to you because there is an App Store for your Mac and there is an App Store for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. If Apple hadn't invented the term "App Store" and used it for its super successful site, you would never have heard the term, and you wouldn't know what it means.

Yes, you know what an "app store" means if you know what an "app" means.

Does an "app" mean an Apple program?

As others have pointed out (repeatedly), Windows does actually refer to what you call 'Programs' as applications. For example, right click on a 'program' shortcut. On the short-cut, what does it say for the "target type?"

Since you seem to have trouble reading so-far, I'll give you a hint: it says "Application."

It's been this way since <at least> Windows XP.

It's doesn't matter what MS calls it. There's a class of programs everywhere called "applications". There's no other name for it.

Applications are a strict subset of programs.

I had to have a good laugh following the greenpeace links from the macrumors article.

    * the "making waves" site had a pic and an article stating "our volunteers outside weere handing out real organic green apples". Only thing is the apples in the picture are red!

*what are greenpeace more upset about...? the fact that there are tonnes of electronic waste in a garbage dump? or the fact that there are hundreds of poor and underpriviledged kids running around the dump collecting the waste in order to survive? I am sure that by fixing Apple's problems they will remove these kids from the dump! What is supposed to be in a garbage dump....the waste or the scavaging kids?

Isn't a single TB bus capable of driving more than one display.... so can you drive two displays from a single port?

Might need a powered hub perhaps.. Dunno.

Actually, "this complaint" is about something that is in the developer's guide. The use of Apple icons. There have been lots of apps that have been rejected over it because of the use of icons to similar to other iPhone system icons, or Apple OS icons.

    No, actually it says:

    (d) To the best of Your knowledge and belief, Your Application and Licensed Application Information do not and will not violate, misappropriate, or infringe any Apple or third party copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy and publicity, trade secrets, patents, or other proprietary or legal rights (e.g. musical composition or performance rights, video rights, photography or image rights, logo rights, third party data rights, etc. for content and materials that may be included in Your Application);

This is language with legal meaning. There is almost certainly no copyright infringement (fair use, which is a multi-factor test - making money off of the "copying" doesn't eliminate it. Or implied license/exhaustion.)

It doesn't say "you can't use apple icons." It says "you can't INFRINGE apple copyright."

What I'm hoping for is that Apple uses the metallic finish of its nanos. My Sony Ericsson has a metallic blue finish but is actually made of plastic. It would be sweet to have a real metal phone. I predict Apple will launch in a single metallic color (the nano black or silver), and then within a year or less provide all the nano colors.A partially metal housing is certainly possible, but if a phone has an internal antenna there has to be a plastic "window" in the housing that the antenna can operate through.

Metal housings are a pain for cell phone RF engineers because they have a nasty tendency to interfere with the radiativity (the "shape" of the radio emissions of the antenna). You generally can't use the housing itself as an antenna because it's difficult to get a uniform impedance match due to all the different ways people hold a phone, variations in skin conduction (not to mention SAR issues...), resting surfaces like metal tabletops, etc. The metal usually can't be left "floating," i.e., electrically isolated from the rest of the phone--though there are exceptions--and usually needs to be connected to the common phone ground to give it fixed RF characteristics, resulting in things like the spring fingers you sometimes see inside a phone that touch off on a point of a metal battery door.

The RAZR is an excellent example of this. The bulk of the phone housing is metal, but there are numerous internal grounding contacts for the housing, and the area around the antennas is plastic (the "chin" below the keyboard).

Dell currently quotes 9-22. Or did yesterday when I placed an order.

Just checked again. It does appear that laptops are ready to go on 9-22, 9-25, and 9-27, depending on which model and size. Still, that gives Apple some "breathing room" to release theirs.

I'm personally of the opinion that anyone that thinks they have any privacy in this digital age is lying to themselves. There is no privacy, every single time you do anything on the internet or cell phone, some device somewhere is keeping a log of it. This is just one more way. But like other people mentioned, unless you're a criminal or the victim of a highly sophisticated stalker, then no one really cares about your private data.

With that said, if Apple is in fact storing location data when you specifically turn location services off on your iPhone, then this is a big problem that needs to be remedied. Their TOS specifically states that they are not collecting this data when you turn location services off and that is a flat out lie.

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. Applestores must be filled with cash. I would think one would be a bit easier to rob than a bank.
    Cash? Who uses that anymore?

Even your receipt is automatically emailed to you.

After a bit of thought I think I'm siding with Apple... here's why:

The strongest argument I've read against the trademark is that 'App Store' is describing the very thing it actually is. Someone likened this to renaming 'Windows' to 'Operating System'.

However what isn't appreciated is that 'App' is in itself an abbreviation. It's debatable whether apple popularised it not but thats not the point. Basically it would be like renaming 'Windows' to 'Ope System'.

I'd argue that 'Ope System' could be trademarked whereas 'Operating System' couldn't...

Nice try. But "app" and "application" have been synonymous for more than a decade. They have always been used interchangeably. "Ope System" and "Operating System" have not been used interchangeably.

GPS, whay arent you accurate? Oh right, security issues....
This is off topic, and maybe I'm misunderstanding to boot... Are you saying GPS isn't accurate? It's been running at full accuracy for years now-- you can get to a couple feet with WAAS, better than a centimeter using differential techniques. The principle limitation on accuracy is atmospheric effects, not security concerns.

I've always felt the sheer number of applications available for the iphone was a huge advantage to the platform. But if this bad press continues Apple will lose this advantage. I want quality applications not junk.

What bothers me most about the above is the inability of anyone in charge to THINK. They just blindly follow "rules" laid out without stopping to use their greatest gift; their brains.

Apple needs to get on top of this right away. They need to understand this is a learning process and adapt/amend procedures that don't work. I appreciate that they are trying to do, but junk still gets through and quality is being driven away in frustration. :(

Instead of having a slide-down clickwheel that reveals buttons, why not just have the clickwheel behave like those old roatary phones. You can just scroll around a circle of numbers on the screen and click to select it. That'd be cleaner. Of course text messages are a different thing :)

While I'm here, I'd just like to reiterate my belief that Apple will have it's own network and not offer its phone to other carriers (they don't want it anyway). They will lease lines like Boost or ESPN does.

Although I've been shot down on this before, I still believe it and I've even heard media mention the same thing, so I'd be willing to bet. (In fact my Jan-07 call options are a bet!).

This would be sweet! I definitely wouldn't mind switching to Cingular and their rollover minutes. Looking at Cingular's family plans it looks like I would save about $20/month over my current T-Mobile plan. And since Cingular is GSM like T-Mobile, my mom (who I share the plan with) could continue using her existing simple Samsung mobile phone that she's familiar and comfortable with (I'd just have to get a Cingular SIM card). And as someone already mentioned above, phone numbers in the US are transferrable between carriers, so although it's probably a pain I would do all the paperwork to transfer the 2 numbers I have under T-Mobile.

I just hope the phone is sweet enough to make me wanna ditch my already impressive Sony Ericsson phone. The main improvents I would be looking for over my SE phone are:

    - Better music player software/controls (I think this one's a safe bet)
    - Stereo bluetooth (less sure about this one)
    - 3G enabled (looks promising - I'm hoping the iPhone will be 3.5G HSDPA enabled like the LG CU500 phone)
    - Better browser (Actually Opera mini is fine, maybe all that's needed is a larger screen and faster connection speed)
    - Better camera, especially under low light conditions (almost guaranteed to be better camera based on rumors it's 3 megapixels and also Apples experience integrating tiny video cameras into its laptops and iMacs)
    - Larger screen (would like it to be 2+ inches diagonal and at least 320 x 240 pixels) (this one I think is a safe bet)

So basically, I will almost certainly be getting the iPhone as soon as it's available and I fill out the paperwork to transfer my number over...

    Hey everybody,
So often I hear people talk about how great the customer service is for Verizon, Cingular, and Sprint. Why are all of you in need of customer service with these companies? I'm with T Mobile and have never needed to call and straighten a bill out, or get credit applied to my account. I'd say the best customer service is the kind you don't need to use. So, I'm hoping that T Mobile will carry the iPhone 6 months after the initial release.

Lucky you. I have T-Mobile and I've definitely had reason to call them. I thought their customer service was excellent (better than Verizon or AT&T), but I still wouldn't say that their service is "so good you never need to call them up".

I'm not sure why there is so much argument about the term "app". The trademark is for "App Store" not for "app". It would be like arguing that "Burger King" is not a valid trademark because "burger" is a generic term.

That's almost 100% a hardware malfunction that causes Windows to restart after a serious failure. The default setting in Windows is to restart when it encounters a serious system failure and this can be disabled in the control panel to aid in seeking out the failing hardware. But I guess this is too late to fix now, since it sounds as if you sold the machine.
Stevie doesn't sell machines, especially one's he can still use daily.

When I can be bothered, I will scrub both drives on it clean and reinstall XP and Fedora Core 5 on there. It still won't get used as much as my Mac though.

well yes i might try that, but even if my attempt failed i won't bother to manage to get the new one, cause as you pointed out, there obviously aren't that much of major differences, as most of us seem to agree upon.....
