Do you're self a favour and ask for your pac code when the phon is released. A free upgrade is pretty much to be expected, if you dont ask for the pac code their unlikely to give you any other freebies.

You should always ask for the pac code and then wait for their retention team to give you a call back

    Jay
    What's a pac code?

Now, I hate Windows and I use it at work because I have no choice. An there are plenty of bad things in it. But I don't get any BSODs. I really don't. Back when I used a desktop, I sometimes left the machine running for weeks and I had no problems.

When was the last time you used Windows? Back in Windows ME-days?
I have had a few BSODs in XP, but they are rare. Mainly I used to leave my tower on 24/7 and the worst I would get is switching my monitor on first thing in the morning or when I got home from work and see it had rebooted itself and was telling me it was an invalid system disc.

Since Mac, never once has this happened, (even though I tend to power down on this more often, I still often leave running 24/7 if it is doing something that requires up time).

Strangely enough, I am one fo the few that never had that many problems with ME.

Are they any good? I've never seen a phone with a good camera, 10MP phone sounds like 10MP of grainy nasty pictures to me.

By definition, 10MP phone cannot be as grainy as a 3MP phone. You do realize when someone says 10MegaPixel phone what they mean right?.
10 million pixels per square inch (before the tech police come out, this is a basic definition. I am aware an image does not have to be a square).

I think the fact that Microsoft is spending so much money to fight the trademark so they can use it rather than just coming up with their own name (after all that would be much cheaper) says they don't think it's generic.

If it was generic, the name wouldn't have so much marketing power that Microsoft is willing to spend this much money so they can use it too... Microsoft obviously feels that the marketing power of being able to use that name will draw enough users in to make up for the money they are paying to fight Apple claiming no one else can use it. Otherwise, they'd feel it was not worth all that money to spend rather than just getting one of their employees to come up with a name or even a simple contest amongst employees (or even the public) with a reward (That most likely would be cheaper than the lawyers) for who picks the winning name.

The fact that MS is willing to spend all this money alone says that the name is not generic.

every single time you do anything on the internet or cell phone, some device somewhere is keeping a log of it.
And simply forcing all instances that keep logs of personal data to delete them after a short period would solve this.
How hard is it to periodically delete old log files? It works fine for system.log, no reason this cannot also be made to work for other types of log files.

Presumably with a warrant and not on the fly at the side of the road without a warrant. Although I remember reading about some sort of site the gov has set up with the carriers where they can get info without warrants (patriot act thing).

Still they store it and can access it - nobody except my touches my iPhone and my Laptop. I actually enjoyed looking at the map. Nobody can access it on they fly on the road.

I heard I think here at macrumors that Sony's mp3/phone is selling like hotcakes and I think they branded it as a walkman/cell phone.

What I hope is that the iPhone will be on Cingular, since my entire family and most of my friends are on it. I'd pass on the phone if they do one of those new deals where you're piggy-backing on other networks like Alltel (alltell, altell??) or it's on another carrier.

    mpstrex

Here in Japan Sony's Chaku-Uta (mobile/cell phone music) dominates the market. With Chaku-Uta digital music sales out selling iTunes. Almost every Japanese phone can play Chaku or Chaku-Uta music.

The Cell phone networks in Japan do have good connections to the internet and mobile devices sell extremely well here. iTunes on a cell phone would work well here but Sony and Chaku-Uta may have it sewn up.

Thank goodness Intel will be supporting USB3 for our peripherals.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who is barely tolerating the mouse and keyboard lag from the slower USB2 port.

Have anybody seen a benchmark which compares the core 2 duo with the actuall core duo?

I can only see benchmarks between core 2 duo and AMD CPU's and standard dual core Pentium 4 cpu.

    Thanks
    Masoud

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2648&p=1

Compare Core Duo vs. AMD. At least until someone does a Core Duo vs. Core 2 Duo benchmark.

As Eidorian's link points out, Core Duo (Yonah) performance falls somewhere between the Athlon X2 3800 and the Athlon X2 4200. The 2.40GHz E6600, 2.66GHz E6700, and 2.93GHz X6800 Core 2 Duos in particular are at least 40% faster, which is exactly what Intel promised at the IDF (although they were comparing it against the Pentium D).*yawns*

Right off the bat, I have two final generation Powerbook G4s (one is mine, one is my son's) so I figured that it would be a good side by side test for the new video formats.

I went to iTunes and grabbed a copy of Grosse Pointe Blank and popped the DVD version in for a side by side test.

I have to say that the quality on the iTunes version was very great. There are portions of the video where the quality definitely look better than the DVD version played back through the Apple DVD Player and portions that without a doubt look significantly worse.

When it comes to Title Sequences (Credits and some text overlays in the begining), the DVD wins hands down as the edges get a very choppy on the iTunes version.

When it comes to your normal scenes where people are talking and not much is going on, the iTunes version seems to have the edge (less pixelized backgrounds, appears to have greater detail around edges of fairly stationary objects, etc.).

When it comes to high action sequences, it really is a toss up between the two as neither really look that great (substantial bluring around moving objects).

For the parts of the show that matter, I would say that h264 (iTunes) scales better on larger high resolution screens than MPEG2 (DVD).

I plan on grabbing some stills and editing them together at the seams to see if there really is a noticable difference or if my eyes are playing tricks on me, but that will have to wait for a couple days.

I've been holding out to buy a mac for a long time.

I'm currently using one that my work purchased for me, but am not sure that I could justify buying one on my own just yet.

The buying guide here shows an average of 215 days between releases. However, the latest release was something like 300+ days, so time seems to be increasing.

That said, a new release would be due between late september and mid december.

My guess is that this revision will be the one that finally pushes me over the edge. Why?
    - They will almost certainly fix the stupid sharp edge
    - The CPU will be fast enough for anything I need for a long time
    - It will be the new generation of chassis
    - Ivy bridge for lower heat/power consumption
    - Lion will be released. I don't want to pay for that upgrade and I absolutely need resizable windows from all edges.

What worries me the most is:
    1. Will the 13.3" get discrete graphics? If yes, I'll buy
    2. Will the screen be IPS? Probably not a dealbreaker, but important.

Maybe theoretically you should do that, but I don't know anyone that actually does on Windows or OS X. In both cases you aren't actually running with your full powers all the time, and get prompted to escalate if something needs admin access.

The default account created in Mac OS X has password authentication. Your password is the unique identifier. Most people use the default account created by the OS for day to day computing.

Commercial software shouldn't be installing malware...I mean tons of it now has all kinds of DRM that is arguably malware, but...
While I'd rather run something without giving it full access to the system, ultimately you're trusting the publisher either way.

When the software is running with superuser privilege and connects to servers that can be controlled by anybody such as in many online games for Windows, the content downloaded from the server can be written anywhere in your system. This allows keyloggers, backdoors, and malware rootkits to be installed.

    Why?

    Why! (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=11720477&postcount=182).

I really doubt they double count things like that, given they're counted separately. I suppose there might be some validity to it if they did.

They count the number of items in each vendors security releases. Mac OS X includes Flash, Java, & etc by default so vulnerabilities in those are counted for Mac OS X because included in Apple security releases. Often these items constitute the majority of vulnerabilities in the security release. It is only valid if Windows users don't install Flash, Java, various ActiveX components, codecs, etc, etc, etc...

I'm not seeing why you're saying there's any difference. I don't use IE or Safari as my primary browser, though there may be some validity to including one or the other in the list of OS issues, but at any rate neither yet sandboxes plug-ins to my knowledge.
There's a flag that can be set for that, but I'm not sure where you're getting it from that article. Regardless 'some' is better than 'none'.

Except for Chrome which is sandboxed, all browser are susceptible to the security problems of the underlying OS but these issues arise in more than just the browser. An example of how they are different is Java has no security mitigations (DER or ASLR) in Windows (as shown in article) but Java has hardware based DEP and partial ASLR in Mac OS X as Java is 64 bit in OS X. Also, Mac OS X randomizes memory space into 4 byte chunks making it more difficult to defeat ASLR while Windows uses 64 byte chunks. Like you said, some is better than none.

Security mitigations, such as DEP and ASLR, can be optionally set in Windows OSes for various reasons such as support for legacy software. A lot of software for Windows comes with weak security by default and will break if the user tries to modify its settings. In Mac OS X, apps have a standard level of security mitigations dependent on the type of process (32 or 64 bit) that are set at that standard level when the app is compiled and not modifiable as in Windows (Opt-in, Opt-out, etc).

Which is different from Windows how?

Because Windows has a history of malware that achieves privilege escalation and Mac OS X does not? Check out these from late November 2010:

Security hole in Windows kernel allows UAC bypass (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/security-hole-in-windows-kernel-allows-uac-bypass/7752)
Nightmare kernel bug lets attackers evade Windows UAC security (http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9198158/_Nightmare_kernel_bug_lets_attackers_evade_Windows_UAC_security)

I think this could very well be true.

The new Windows OS is surprisingly well thought out and have a lot of the features I miss in my standard iPhone 4 iOS - and only have because of Jailbreak :)

I could very well see myself buying a windows based Nokia - if they get the interior in harmony with the exterior - I still think iPhone 4 is the best looking phone I've ever owned - but still think it lacks some basic features in the iOS - like a Lock screen with calendar and weather info, basic features like changing the mail alert tone and being able to use the outer buttons as dual buttons for a shutter button on the volume button for instance (which a camera app did have, but Apple thought their consumers were too stupid and confused to have dual function buttons, so they excluded this app from appstore until they removed the function)

All the features I miss on my iPhone are very basic features, which could easily be fixed with a tiny small software update - since these features don't seem to come on the iPhone, I could see myself getting a HTC with Windows OS maybe in a HTC Desire DeLuxe chassis :)

What really keeps me true to the iPhone is all the apps :)

    Very well put.

I develop for all three platforms, and I must say that the Windows Phone 7 OS is already more user friendly than Android. I have owned 3 generations of iPhones, and 2 generations of iPads. While I won't leave Apple now, I can see a time where, once matured, the Windows Phone 7 / Xbox / Windows Tablet ecosystem will be the one to go with.

Until then, I will show nothing but love for my MBP, iPhone, and iPad 2, but let's NOT be short sighted fanboys here... No one thought Apple could make a successful phone or tablet either - and looks where we are at now. It's foolish to think Microsoft won't compete.

Sony didn't think they had a worry about their Playstation either, and now look...

    Go away- just go away.

Can we all just agree not to talk abiout this thing until it is actually out? There is so much BS about this thing, maybe it does not deserve anything until two weeks after it is out... if ever.

Sorry man, this is MacRumors. If you don't like talking about rumored products and such, sign up for an account on MacFacts. :p

The mock-up looks cool - definitely something that I could see Apple designing. It bares quite a similarity though to LG's Chocolate phone...
